How to exchange Rs 2,000 notes at a bank branch: Step-by-step guide
Starting May 23, 2023, anyone holding Rs. 2000 notes in their possession can exchange it with other denominations in any bank branch. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stated that Rs 2000 currency notes will be considered legal tender even after September 30, 2023.According to the RBI press release dated May 22, 2023, “The facility of exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes across the counter shall be provided to the public in the usual manner, that is, as was being provided earlier.”
The RBI also advised banks to provide appropriate infrastructure at the branches such as shaded waiting space, drinking water facilities, etc. considering the summer season.
To minimise delays to the public and prevent interference with the routine operations of bank branches, the maximum amount of Rs 2000 notes that can be exchanged at one time is Rs 20000, according to the RBI press release.
In a media interaction on May 22, 2023, the RBI governor stated that the process to exchange the notes will remain the same as before.
#Step 1 – Visit the nearest bank branch with Rs 2000 notes available with you.
#Step 2- Fill in the requisition slip, enter the details required to facilitate the exchange process of Rs 2000 notes.
#Step 3: Submit the slip along with Rs 2000 notes to be exchanged with other denominations.
However, do note that the process may vary depending on the bank. The RBI governor said that banks will follow their own process and rules in case of an exchange of Rs 2,000 notes. Here is a look at what various banks have stated.
° State Bank of India°
On May 21, 2023, the largest PSU bank in India, State Bank of India, stated that it would allow customers to exchange Rs 2000 note for sums up to Rs 20,000 without a requisition slip.
"It has been decided that the facility of exchange of Rs.2000/- denomination Bank Notes to all members of the public upto a limit of Rs.20000/- at a time will be allowed without obtaining any requisition slip as per the format attached in Annexure- III," a circular from the state lender said.
